Pafos Cyprus
Pafos, Cyprus
The island of Cyprus has become a very popular place for holiday travelers and overseas real estate investors. The Republic of Cyprus, on the lower half of the island, has several areas that dominate the tourism and real estate business, including the area around Pafos. The town of Pafos, which is also spelled Paphos in English, is located on the southwest coast of Cyprus. It is also the capital of the Pafos District, one of six districts for the whole island, which takes up the western part of the island.
The city of Pafos has a population of about 50,000, while the whole district has some 70,000 residents. The city itself is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been occupied since the Neolithic Period. It has moved over time, from old Pafos, located a bit inland and south of the current location, to new Paphos, located on the coast. The new city has two main areas: Ktima, on the sea terrace, is the main residential district, and Kato Pafos, by the sea, which is built around the medieval port and contains most of the luxury hotels and the entertainment spots of the city.
Pafos is one of the top destinations on the island in large part because of its climate, which is tempered by its coastal location. The temperature can reach into the 30s in the summer and the sun shines all day long. The winters are cooler, but not cold, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep visitors busy. Bicycling and hiking in the mountains inland from the town are very popular among residents and visitors year round, and the Mediterranean presents the most popular cooling off place in the summer.
There are several beaches around the city, including Lara and Coral Bay, as well as the Akamas Peninsula National Park. For history lovers, there is no end of sites to see. The Pafos Castle, built in the Byzantine era to protect the harbor, is one of the most visited and popular places in the whole city. It has had many uses over the centuries and now is the backdrop to the annual Pafos Cultural Festival each September.
Other sites to see include the Tombs of the Kings, the Pafos Odeon, Aphrodite’s Rock or Petra tou Romiou, several old churches and the Baths of Aphrodite. More modern day activities include golfing at the Secret Valley Golf Club, the Pafos Aquarium and, for the young at heart, the Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark.
In town, the harbor is the center for most activities and visitors. This is where Kato Pafos is and has the hotel and resorts in which most visitors stay. There are many hotels, both large and small, and something will fit your taste and budget. For those who are interested in buying property in the Pafos area, there are also plenty of options available.
Off-plan properties are abundant in and around Paphos, and there are older homes and villas as well as properties for sale where you can build your own dream holiday home. Off plan property, such as this apartment complex in Geroskipou outside of the city, can start as low as €76,630. Larger and more upscale properties can be had near the coast, such as in the village of Kissonerga, near Coral Bay. Here is a new luxury development with prices starting at €208,450. There are many other place in which to invest, new and old, small and large.
Pafos is approximately 150 kilometers southwest of the capital city of Nicosia and 70 kilometers northwest of Limassol. The A6 motorway connects the city to Limassol, and from there the A1 takes you to Nicosia. Most travelers and visitors to Paphos and the western part of Cyprus use the Paphos International Airport (PFO). Located 16 km southwest of the city, this airport is modern and handles over 1.5 million passengers each year. There is a new terminal under construction so that future increases in traffic will be easily incorporated into the airport.
Several major airlines as well as charter companies fly from the UK to Paphos. British Airways has flights from Gatwick and Thomas Cook has charter flights from all over the UK direct to Pafos, mostly in the summer holiday season. There are several discount carriers that also serve the island and Pafos, including Jet2.com, Thomsonfly and easyJet. The flight from London is typically about 4 hours.
